At this year’s NASC Awards Part of ScaffX 2025 in Manchester, Chris Sedgeman Scaffolding was proud to be named runner-up and highly commended for Project of the Year – Medium. Against strong competition from some of the UK’s leading scaffolding companies including Shield Services Group Bristol Pickering Scaffolding and Rose System Scaffolding, our St John’s Hall project in Penzance stood out for its complexity, heritage sensitivity, and technical innovation.
Why the Judges Recognised St John’s Hall
The NASC Awards celebrate projects that embody the very best of scaffolding and access – skill, safety, leadership, client satisfaction, innovation, teamwork, and sustainability. Our project was commended for delivering on all these fronts:
- Engineering under pressure: The Grade II listed civic building required scaffolding that respected fragile stonework and a central glass atrium with zero load capacity. Our team engineered bridging and a bespoke temporary roof system that overcame these constraints.
- Complex logistics: With the site fully operational – hosting council offices, weddings, library services, and even a community kitchen – scaffolding had to be phased, quiet, and visually unobtrusive. Judges highlighted our ability to protect daily life in a busy public space.
- Heavy lifting with precision: A 200-tonne crane was used to lift a six-lorry-load roof frame and spine beam into position. By pre-assembling sections at ground level and coordinating a 1.5-day lift operation, we minimised risks and disruption.
- Innovation in design: Our team designed and installed a bespoke drainage system in the spine beam to handle extreme weather and later integrated a custom runway tracking system to support leadwork – reducing manual handling and ensuring safety during hot works.
- Workforce development: Five of our scaffolders gained critical evidence towards advanced qualifications, showing our commitment to both the project and the future of our people.
Recognition Among the Best
The Project of the Year – Medium category featured outstanding entries, including Shield Services Group’s Old BRI project in Bristol, Pickering Scaffolding’s A43 temporary roof, and Rose System Scaffolding’s East Manchester mixed-use scheme. To be recognised alongside them shows the strength of our industry and the quality expected of NASC members.
Chris Sedgeman Scaffolding’s combination of technical precision, community sensitivity, and innovative problem-solving and high safety standards.
Looking Forward
Being named runner-up at NASC 2025 is a milestone we’re incredibly proud of making this our 6th NASC Award and our 3rd Project of the Year award since 1996. It reflects the dedication of our team, the trust of our client, and the standards we uphold as NASC members – safety, professionalism, and innovation.
From Cornwall to projects across the UK, our mission has always been simple: do things right, invest in people, and never forget where we started
We’ll continue to push boundaries on future projects, showing what scaffolding can achieve when engineering excellence meets teamwork and determination.
