Chris Sedgeman Scaffolding supplied scaffolding for the construction of the new-build Asda Superstore at South Quay, Hayle. The project formed part of a £12m, 50,000 sq ft harbourside regeneration scheme within a historically sensitive World Heritage setting.

The scaffolding works supported the main store build, providing access solutions appropriate for a large-scale commercial structure constructed using structural steelwork. Given the size of the building, scaffolding was required to facilitate external façade installation, roofing works, and associated detailing throughout the construction programme.

The South Quay location introduced additional technical considerations. The site sits adjacent to a Grade II listed quay within an exposed coastal environment, meaning access solutions had to account for weather exposure, restricted working areas, and close coordination with ongoing site logistics. Scaffold design and sequencing needed to integrate with plant movement, steel erection, and follow-on trades, ensuring safe and efficient access without impeding the overall build programme.

As with most commercial new-build projects, scaffolding requirements evolved as construction progressed. Phased erection, alteration, and dismantling allowed access to be maintained where required while accommodating changes in work areas and sequencing. Maintaining clear routes for operatives and other contractors was a key consideration throughout.

The completed building — finished in May 2014 — is a bespoke Asda store designed to sit sympathetically within its historic harbour setting, featuring brass cladding and non-standard signage. Projects of this nature demonstrate the importance of well-planned commercial scaffolding that supports complex builds while respecting sensitive environments and tight construction programmes.
